Official Tracking Partner for Air Race 1 World Cup

The Air Race 1 World Cup Presented by Chang will keep pace with its lightning-quick pilots thanks to an exciting new partnership with aviation tech experts 51 Aero.

51Aero will be providing tracking data for the Formula One race staged at Thailand’s U-Tapao Naval Airbase November 17-19, 2017.  GPS systems will be installed on board the race planes to ensure clean contests and confirm finishing positions after each race.

With Air Race 1 the world’s premier airborne series and fastest motorsport on the planet, the tracking devices will be instrumental in ensuring pilots don’t cut corners as they race around the pylons which mark the tight, three-mile (5km) oval circuit.

Hosted by the Sports Authority of Thailand, part of the Ministry of Tourism and Sport, the world’s purest air race challenges pilots in a demanding test of skill. Each race sees up to eight pilots go head-to-head at speeds of 250 miles per hour just meters above the ground.

Jeff Zaltman, CEO of Air Race 1, said: “I’m delighted to welcome 51 Aero on board as the Official Tracking Partner of the Air Race 1 World Cup.

“With our pilots racing at such high speeds, it is vital we have the latest tech tracking the race planes to not only determine race results but also further enhance the safety of all competitors.

“I’ve been really impressed by 51 Aero’s tracking systems and their passion for the sport called formula one air racing. This partnership will only add to what is already shaping up to be unforgettable contest in Thailand.”

51 Aero is renowned for its state-of-the-art custom flight data recording and analysis systems for air racers, warbirds and fast experimental aircraft. The company is run by Founder Fred Roscher and wife Lisa Hatamoto, Operations Director for 51 Aero.

“Jeff is determined to embrace new technology to make Air Race 1 the very best event it can be and we can’t wait to be a part of the World Cup,” said Fred.

“We’ll be tracking the positions of the airplanes as they race round the pylons and also their altitude, as we don’t want them flying too close to the ground. Almost instantaneously after each race, we’ll be able to declare if it was a clean contest, with no pylon cuts!

“The Air Race 1 World Cup is going to be an incredibly awesome event. We’ve been part of the Reno racing scene for so many years, seeing the vast amounts of people the sport attracts, so it’s a brilliant idea to take formula one air racing to new countries and venues. The backdrop in Thailand will be spectacular.”

To ensure a fair competition between pilots, each Air Race 1 plane must be built to a specific formula that covers most aspects of the race plane’s characteristics, including wing area, weight and engine size.

The class of airplanes incorporate the most modern materials and cutting-edge technology for those all-important marginal gains.

As in all motorsport, an element of success is down to the designers, engineering teams and ground crew support in the pits. Many of the pilots and teams design and build their own race plane to capitalize on unique innovations.

The Air Race 1 World Cup Presented by Chang will be shown live in Thailand, and later screened in over 100 countries across Europe, Asia and the USA.
